Current champion of New Jersey, Brandon Borden obtained the top prize trophy of the Princeton Charter School chess tournament, after winning a very dramatic playoff against Kevin Zheng. After 4 rounds, both chess players ended with a perfect score; therefore, they had to battle each other to decide the trophy for the Rook's section, designated for chess players with a USCF rating greater than 1000 points.
Brandon, who is training in TAG, the private chess program in Princeton, is adding another important title in his chess career.
The playoff was originally set to four games, but Brandon and Kevin alternated wins, forcing an extension three times until the playoff went to a single winner-take-all conclusion, where Brandon finally imposed his king. "It was a tough battle between these two gladiators" mentioned Oscar Garcia from New York, the tournament director of USCF.
Thirty seven chess players from all over New Jersey took part in the event, divided in Little Kings, Pawns, Knights, Bishops, Rooks and Queens.
The Queens section, designated for girls, was won by Alexis Wiggley with a perfect score among eight students in this category. The winners in the other sections were Daniel Selyutin (Bishops), Marko Van Selous (Knights), Alexander Roth (Pawns), and Rishi Rajendran (Little Kings).
The next event will be announced soon.
